Siggraph 2006
Early August Siggraph was held In Boston! Siggraph 2006 was a smaller show comparing to Siggraph 2005, this proves that LA is a more convenient place for the Siggraph crowd. I did attend at 2006 Siggraph as a faculty of the Art Institute of California, Los Angeles and I have to say if there was anything worth seeing was at the educational exhibitors' booths. AI booth drawing and other classes were always packed with eager participants and visitors.
Caligari, the creators of TrueSpace demonstrated on-line collaboration on 3D production for the first time. Now several independent artists can work on the same project from different location ay the same time.
This thirty-three years old show is the Mecca of digital media artists. In 1974, the same year that president Nixon resigned and Duke Ellington passed away, 600 people gathered at the University of Colorado in Boulder to for the first Siggraph. At Siggraph 1985 an amazing 3D animated short, Luxo Jr. by John Lasseter and William Reeves, was screened at the show. This short film, admired by its viewers, was the first milestone towards building Pixar quality animation. Luxo got an academy award nomination in 1986. Ten years later, Siggraph 1995 introduced a few turning points to the world of digital art. Microsoft presented Windows NT and the first Windows version of SoftImage 3D. Intel premiered the very first Pentium CPUs and Autodesk unveiled with 3D Studio MAX for Windows. Prior to Siggraph 1995, there were no powerful desktop systems for digital art creation other than Amiga computers and to own a seat of Softimage 3D you needed tens of thousands of dollars and 3D Studio max had only a Dos version.
